FAQS
What is a single speed bike?
A single speed bike is a bicycle with only one gear ratio—no shifters, no derailleurs, and no front or rear gear changes. Because there's nothing to shift, single speed bikes are simpler, lighter, lower-maintenance, and easier to learn on than geared bikes. They're a popular choice for kids' first bikes, BMX riding, and casual neighborhood cruising.
Are single speed bikes good for kids?
Yes,single speed bikes are ideal for kids, especially beginners. Without gears to learn, children can focus on balance, pedaling, and braking instead of worrying about shifting. Single speed bikes also have fewer moving parts that can fail or need adjustment, so they stay rider-ready longer. Most Glerc bikes for ages 2–10 are single speed for exactly this reason.
What's the difference between a single speed bike and a geared bike?
A single speed bike has one fixed gear ratio—simpler, lighter, and easier to maintain. A geared (multi-speed) bike has 6, 7, or 21 gears to handle hills, long distances, or varied terrain. For flat neighborhoods, schoolyards, and short rides, a single speed bike is faster to learn and more reliable. For mountain trails, hills, or longer rides, a geared bike helps the rider keep a comfortable cadence.
Do single speed bikes need less maintenance?
Yes,significantly less. With no derailleurs, shifters, or shift cables, single speed bikes have fewer parts that can fail, slip, or need adjustment. Routine care is mostly chain lubing, tire pressure, and brake checks. For even lower upkeep, our belt drive single speed bike (Nova) replaces the chain entirely with a clean, oil-free carbon belt—great for parents who want a no-fuss ride.
